Conductor Jordan de Souza continues to garner international renown for leading inspiring performances of both orchestral and operatic music. Dubbed a part of “the new generation leading Berlin’s classical music scene” by the New York Times, and winner of an Opus Klassik award, de Souza's artistry has resonated across continents, including appearances with ensembles such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Bavarian State Opera.
Upcoming seasons see Mr. de Souza begin a pivotal new chapter in his career: in August 2025, he will take on the role of General Music Director of Theater Dortmund and Chief Conductor of the Dortmunder Philharmoniker. Recent performances with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Netherlands Opera, and the Royal Danish Opera underscore his growing presence and reputation on the international stage.
Born into an immigrant family from Goa (India) as the seventh of eight children, Jordan de Souza's musical journey began as a talented keyboardist in Toronto, Canada. He attended St. Michael’s Choir School from the age of 8, where his talents quickly flourished. By age 12, he had his first experience conducting choirs, and at 15, he was appointed Cathedral Organist - a precursor of significant moments to come. At just 19, de Souza received the Fellowship Degree from the Royal Canadian College of Organists, making him the youngest graduate in its history.
After moving to Berlin in 2016, de Souza rapidly gained prominence within the German music scene. In 2020, he won Opus Klassik’s Best Opera Recording for his work on Weinberger's Frühlingsstürme, a daring reconstruction of the Weimar Republic’s last operetta at the Komische Oper Berlin, alongside the visionary director and frequent collaborator Barrie Kosky. The two have worked together on myriad critically lauded productions, tackling everything from the mysterious Pelléas et Mélisande to the passionate tragedy of La bohème, the biting satire of Candide, and the mythic grandeur of Iphigénie en Tauride. Notably, de Souza was honored with the Operettenfrosch award in Austria for his work with director Nikolaus Habjan on La Périchole at Theater an der Wien. His recent work in the recording studio features a Mahler album with the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, and studio sessions with the London Symphony Orchestra at London's iconic Abbey Road Studios.
The breadth of his musical command is a cornerstone of de Souza's growing prominence. His perspective on Romantic legends like Wagner and Strauss, with standout interpretations in new productions of Tristan und Isolde at Seattle Opera, Der fliegende Holländer in Mannheim, and Der Rosenkavalier at Garsington, has cemented his growing reputation as a conductor able to blend the intellectual with the visceral, drawing both nuance and raw emotion from each score. In a notable engagement with the Vienna Symphony, he led thirty performances of Carmen at the Bregenz Festival across two summers, reaching an audience exceeding 200,000. In addition, de Souza’s reach extends deep into the contemporary music world, where he has conducted more than a dozen world premieres, including five full-length operas and numerous symphonic works. Recent highlights include the operas The Righteous (Santa Fe Opera) and Medea (Tapestry Opera), alongside new symphonic works commissioned by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the BBC NOW.
Active on the world stage, de Souza opened the 2019 Adelaide Festival in Australia, made his debut at the prestigious BBC Proms in 2022, and has led performances at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, the Bregenz Festival (Austria), the Glyndebourne Festival (England), Choriner Musiksommer (Germany) and the Weill Festival in Dessau. His opera credentials are equally far-reaching, with appearances at marquee venues including the Canadian Opera Company, Oper Zurich, Dutch National Opera, Garsington Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Oper Graz, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Deeply committed to the next generation of musicians, he is a frequent presence in masterclasses at top institutions like the Guildhall School of Music, University of Toronto, Adelaide University, Université de Montréal, and Berlin’s Hanns Eisler School of Music.
Currently based in Germany, Mr. de Souza lives with his wife, soprano Jana Miller, and their two children.
Der Dirigent Jordan de Souza beginnt im August 2025 seine Amtszeit als Generalmusikdirektor der Stadt Dortmund. Seine Opern- und Konzertdirigate haben ihn rund um den Globus geführt, etwa zum Londoner Philharmonic Orchestra, zum Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, zum Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, zur Lyric Opera of Chicago, zu den prestigeträchtigen BBC Proms und zur Bayerischen Staatsoper in München.
Als siebtes von acht Kindern einer indischen Einwandererfamilie aus Goa geboren, erhielt Jordan de Souza seine Schulbildung auf einer katholischen Chorschule im kanadischen Toronto, wo sich seine Talente schnell entfalten konnten. Bereits im Alter von 12 Jahren konnte de Souza hier erste Erfahrungen als Chorleiter sammeln, mit 15 wurde er zum Organisten der Kathedrale ernannt und mit 19 Jahren erhielt er den Fellowship Degree des Royal Canadian College of Organists – als jüngster Absolvent in der Geschichte des Colleges. Seine weiteren musikalischen Studien führten ihn nach Montréal an die McGill University und das Conservatoire de musique de Montréal.
Die Ernennung zum 1. Kapellmeister der Komischen Oper Berlin im Jahr 2016, verbunden mit seinem Umzug in die Hauptstadt, gab de Souzas Karriere entscheidenden Auftrieb. An der Seite des Regisseurs und Intendanten Barrie Kosky hatte er die musikalische Leitung in zahlreichen hochgelobten Neuinszenierungen der Komischen Oper inne und wurde von der New York Times zur „neuen Generation, die die klassische Musikszene Berlins anführt“ gerechnet. Zusammen mit Kosky erhielt de Souza 2020 den Opus-Klassik-Preis für die Produktion von Jaromir Weinbergers Frühlingsstürme ausgezeichnet, einer Rekonstruktion des als letzte Operette der Weimarer Republik geltenden Werks.
Als gefragter Gastdirigent ist de Souza regelmäßig an führenden Häusern tätig, darunter die Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, die Oper Zürich, die Dutch National Opera Amsterdam, die Houston Grand Opera, die Oper Graz und die Deutsche Oper Berlin. Unter anderem leitete er herausragende Neuproduktionen von Wagners Tristan und Isolde an der Seattle Opera, Der Fliegende Holländer am Nationaltheater Mannheim und Richard Strauss‘ Rosenkavalier beim Festival im englischen Garsington. Mit seinen Dirigaten der Wiener Symphoniker in Bizets Carmen auf der Seebühne der Bregenzer Festspiele erreichte er in zwei Sommern mehr als 200.000 Zuschauer. Darüber hinaus ist de Souza auch in der Welt der zeitgenössischen Musik aktiv, wo er mehr als ein Dutzend Werke uraufgeführt hat. Zu seinen jüngsten Arbeiten im Aufnahmestudio gehören ein Mahler-Album mit dem Gürzenich-Orchester Köln und Studiosessions mit dem London Symphony Orchestra.
De Souza engagiert sich nachhaltig für die Förderung des musikalischen Nachwuchses und gibt sein Können auf Meisterkursen an renommierten Institutionen wie der Guildhall School of Music, der University of Toronto, der Adelaide University, der Université de Montréal und der Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ in Berlin weiter.
